Visualizing Winter Olympics Medal Results with Data Studio

Whether your favourite athlete is competing for the record time in the Alpine Skiing Giant Slalom, or the highest score in the Snowboard Halfpipe, the 23 past Winter Olympic Games provide a gold mine of data for visualization practice.

Inspired by the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, we used data from Sports-Reference.com, and created a dashboard outlining the all-time Winter Olympics medal results.

Below is an interactive viz designed in Google Data Studio. Hover over each of the medal colours to see how many were won in each of the Olympic games.

Who are you rooting for this Olympic season? If you’re left feeling inspired, we encourage you to create a visualization of your own with the same data set in Data Studio, and share it with us on Twitter!

    Hi Jonathan,

Great job on this post! I totally wish I would’ve taken your approach to how you wrote this rather than writing a complete tutorial around how I built my March Madness Player List in Data Studio.

Next time I write on Data Studio I’m going to make the end report the feature like you did and then just talk about what they can do with the report.

    Best,

    Dustin
