Everyone’s talking about mobile and as this chart shows, mobile share is certainly rising, doubling in a year.
But for you and your business, does it matter to you?
It depends. If you have a local business and are dependent on store or physical location visits for revenue, it definitely matters to you. Google research has found that 30% of all restaurant searches are now on mobile.
If you don’t have a physical or local business, perhaps the answer is not as clear.
But you should find out, and the best way to do this is look at your website traffic:
- Is mobile traffic over 20% of your total traffic?
- How does the behaviour of this traffic compare to non-mobile traffic?
Google Analytics provides mobile reports and can help you answer these questions.
Here’s an example where mobile matters and action should be taken. Mobile traffic is almost 30%, above the average and the chart above. More importantly than volume, mobile traffic appears to be looking at fewer pages and having shorter visits.
To decide exactly what to do, dive deeper into the data. Ask more questions, such as:
- Does all mobile traffic behave the same way or only those from certain traffic sources, keyword phases, geography, time of day or day of week?
- What pages are they looking at, and do they fill out a contact us form for more information? Do they search onsite?
